Deepika Padukone recently made a path breaking revelation on national television. She became the first celebrity to publicly talk about mental health, a very tabooed topic in India Society. Most people we meet on a daily basis are not even aware of mental health as an issue and depression as a disease. In fact, medicines for the matter are not even available in most clinics. However, many famous people have come out as victims of depression in order to raise awareness and also as a lesson. Depression can be treated and should be taken seriously, or else prove to be fatal, as seen in these examples.
1. Princess Diana
the famous Princess who was married to Prince Charles and died tragically in 1997 was a famous sufferer of depression throughout her life. She had post-partum depression and her mental state worsened after her marriage broke apart.
2. Robin Williams
One of the most loved actors of our generation, he was famous for playing various characters including Mrs Doubtfire and voicing the Genie in Aladdin. However, his severe depression led him to commit suicide.
3. Catherine Zeta-Jones
The famous actress who is also an Oscar Winner is known for raising awareness to Bipolar Disorders. She was a victim of it and came out of it cured and serves as an example for many.
4. Miley Cyrus
The former child actress and now international pop star has said that “There’s nothing worse than being fake happy”. She suffered and now has come out of it.
5. Ellen DeGeneres
The talk show host and sometimes Oscar Host suffered a big blow in the 90’s when her television show was cancelled due to her coming out as homosexual. She has been, since then, a vocal advocate for the treatment of depression.
These people prove that there is a way to deal with this disease if detected at the right time, or else it can lead to real danger and even loss of life.
